A Peaceful Day

On the Trip

Driving back and forth to San Diego the last couple days found interesting stuff. The Terribles gas station on the Nevada/California line with something over 100 gas pumps, I mocked for building in in the middle of nowhere, the pumps are about 40% full when I drove by both times.
On the other hand the Terrible's hotel and casino that has been there forever is not doing well.
I'm taking a nap break somewhere just off the road and I look up at the top of this tree and it has a whole bunch of antennas and boxes sticking out of it. I am told they actually make fake trees like this that are actually electrical equipment to blend in with the landscape.

Linny

We're talking on the phone and I say "I miss my best friend." Linny says "Me too." I say "Are you going to school or working at the moment?" She says "No." I say,"Ok, I'll come get you." She says "Ok." It rains crazy hard all night. In the morning my driveway is gone. Many places are destroyed and I spent lots of shovel hours clearing it. When the last guest has gotten out only to have to wait again while they are clearing Kane Creek. I get a couple hours sleep and head for San Diego. I'm so tired I have to keep pulling over to doze off. A normal 12 hour drive takes me 17 hours. I spend Monday night in San Diego and Tuesday morning Linny and I are on the road to Moab. Out in the desert somewhere there is a crash. The ambulence goes by but is not in a hurry on th way back which means there is a fatality and they have to call a coroner. Linny and I spend two hours not moving even one foot in traffic. This is what we saw.

The Big Rain

Much has happened in the last week. Moab got crushed by a rain storm with lots of flooding and the like. We got hit hard to but we're used to it and we got most of it fixed by the next day. Linny has returned and I give her assignments to go fix portions of the road every day.

Cows

Last time I talked to the cowboys a month or so ago they were still missing 11 cows from last year. Pretty sure one was in Jackson Hole but I'd gone out there four or five times and never found a track. Then two weeks ago I see mom and baby walking down the hill from Jackson Hole. I call the cowboys and tell them but they're gonna be a few days before they come out. Now I can't find them on the way to Lockhart or Dripping Springs where mama had spent considerable time over the years. Gone again.

Some Stuff

Every day there is some percent change of rain on the weather forecast. Have a big beach one day, small and muddy the next. The hottest part of the year appears to be over about a month before it usually is. I'm so ready.
I might have posted this already and if so I apologize. I'm at the post office and have all kinds of packages come in so that they tell me to drive around to the loading area. There is a post office lady loading up her Jeep to head out on her route. I've only got about three or four packages left and I say "Wow you loaded your whole Jeep before I could even get my packages in the truck." She says "Yea, and I didn't put my shirt on backwards this morning." I thought it had been a little tight around the collar. Was my third or fourth stop and nobody said anything until now. Couple days ago I'm at the post office and if Jax is taking a pee or a dump I just go inside and open my box and I'm back outside in under 30 seconds. I come outside and he's not on the front lawn. I hear a yelp and see him about four houses up the street chasing a deer. He comes back when I call him and go back in to get my yellow slip package and he slips through the counter and I hear people deep in the back of the post office saying there's a dog in there. "He's so cute."

The Road

I'm taking the truck we just brought back from San Diego to town and when it goes into the narrow canyons all the CW songs turn into a bunch of Munchikins singing them. So weird. The next two weeks look like 80s and 90s. Maybe hiking is back already. Kobae thinks so.

Things are Different

The Desert Willow bloomed a week or so later than it always does. Kobae has gone out hiking four of the last five nights and he doesn't usually start that until the very end of August and the rainy season got here a month early.
Earlier in the year we had some concerns as to where the fox have gone. Was a bobcat taking them or something else. We had changed up where we put the hot dogs and something made them very scare. I took the feeing back over to the way things use to be and we do not have a fox shortage now. I'd say ten or more of them show up every night and with guests one night we watching a fox get three of them in it's mouth before heading out and apparently all the other foxes saw that also because it's a way of life. There are six to ten raccoons including babies every night. Five ringtails, four are babies and baby skunks running all over the porch. Last week we had a couple 70 hot dog nights but three or four nights ago we smashed the old record of 100 hot dogs in a single night with 115.

Always Improving

I've had 70 to 80 years of almost all National Geographics in closets around the lodge. My thought was to build a female hogan where the inside walls opened to cabinets of history for 80 to 100 years of Nat Geos acted as something to read and insulation. With Doug's new price for his hogan on the hill that's not going to happen so Teresa has put all these book cases together and the living dining room will never have a shortage of things to read. At the same time Elon sent me two more Star Link dishes which Teresa installed in the House and Condo. Way faster and more dependable than Hughes net and about 60% of the cost and no data limits.
