Practicing the Stairs

Friday 114, The Water Bowl

Two degrees short of the highest Tom has ever seen he sets the camera by a busy water bowl for twelve minutes. He meant it to be longer but it turns out American critters don't like being spied on either.

Linny to Hurrah

Little slippery at the top.

The Water Bowl

Tom year round leaves a cooler of water for people in need. Forget to bring it in just one night during the winter and it freezes and forever has a slow drip. Tom has placed a bowl under it because so many disc golfers show up with dogs that it replenishes itself for dogs to drink out of. With scorching temperatures and no disc golfers, so no dogs, the locals visit it regularly.

Recovery

Yesterday morning a helicopter went down the river and in the afternoon Park Service boats were stopping on all the rapidly emerging sand bars and their people getting off and searching for a body. Today it's been more of the same. With the river dropping rapidly it seems they're assuming the guy that was missing when Linny and Tom went down to the Confluence five days ago, if in the river, will come to the top soon.

That's Crazy

Linny saved some money and for the last week Linny and Tom have been driving around looking for a used dirt bike when they pull into a Yamaha dealer in Colorado to have Linny sit on some bikes to make sure they are looking for the right size. When they leave they have an Oset. Never heard of it. That's right, you can't hear it. It's all electric, no motor, no oil, and no gas. Just a battery and amazing power. Returning to the lodge Linny is off to the Wind Caves.

Miracle

For the last couple days Tom has seen cow tracks around the lodge and finally on Monday tracks and locates a cow and fairly new born calf. When the Cowboys left here in March with their herd they weren't missing any cows. Reading the ear tags and calling the Cowboys this mother and baby have hiked 40 plus miles up Lockhart Basin with no known water spots that Tom is aware of and have survived on their own since March.

Journey Home (Just missing a sand bar)

Confluence

Spanish Bottom

After the Confluence where the Green and Colorado Rivers merge and just before Cataract Canyon where the river gets a little bit crazy is an area primarily on the west side of the river called Spanish Bottom where most riders of the river return to their starting points or prepare for an incredible ride thru the rapids of Cataract and into Lake Powell.

Why You Gotta Be So Mean

What's Up has been pushing Who's Up around and keeping her off the front porch so he doesn't have to share flies with her. Lately he's been on the end wall corner when he can watch for her coming in two directions at the same time. Who's Up however has again outsmarted him. She came through the back door to the kitchen where Linny and Tom are secretly feeding her while What's Up gets nothing.

They're Coming

It's hot, it's dry, and the only source of water for the critters comes from the cisterns on the sides of the lodge. The Woodhouse toads have begun their migration to Base Camp for the summer.

Watching and Waiting

Less than a year old even Little Up knows when there's a fly shortage on the front porch, you wait for Kobae the Magic Man to come eat. His untidyness at the dinner table will bring the flies.

Tail Flare

The end of Who's Up's tail looks smashed and is flaring up like bird feathers as it falls off. What's Up didn't show up today, first time, and Who's Up and Little Up spent the whole day on the porch being fed flies by Lydia, Linny, and Tom. So much so that Who's Up is sleeping just a foot or so above where she spent the day. Probably too bloated to move.

Kobae: Math Wizard

Tombstones

Kim, Hannah, Cole, Jamal, Oliver, and Tom climb the Tombstones.

Clay Henry

Clay Henry is the dog that lives at Caveman Ranch across the river. Because there are no cars to chase Clay Henry chases watercraft. He waits on the far shore for kayaks, canoes, rafts and so forth to come down the river and while barking jumps in behind them and chases them down river. When larger tour jet boats come by Clay Henry sometimes gets washed up on this side of the river. Then it's an hours long chore trying to get him back across the river. Get him back across the river we must because he kills everything. There's nothing breathing anywhere when you tour Caveman Ranch, can't even find a lizard, while this side is teeming with life. The next few videos are a condensed what really took two hours to get Clay Henry back across the river. Barking at his echo, digging holes in the mud, chasing imaginary creatures swimming in the river, and eventually getting carried by the current back across the river.
