Day Two of the Unicycle

After yesterday's trip to the Catacombs, rock art drawings, and down to the river, today is an even longer journey. While four are kayaking from town to the lodge in a very strong headwind, seven more are doing the Jackson Hole Loop, up Jacobs Ladder and down Cliff Hanger. No shortage of heart at Base Camp.

Doesn't Get Better Than This

The Gang is Back

As Sunday comes to a close Tom walks down to feed and water the sheep and sees Pinto staring at something in the rocks. The same ten big horn that have been seen several times in the last two weeks are bounding down the rock formation at Base Camp, just below hole #14 on the disc golf course.

Kobae, His Friends, the Moon

Kobae has dinner on the porch with his friends as the moon rises just to the right of Hurrah.

River Kayak

Still more Jorgensens kayak the river from town to Base Camp. In the background, not hard to tell it's Jeep Week.

The Jorgensens

The Jorgensen reunion invades Thousand Eyes and Halls Canyon.

Skinny People, Fossils, and the Artist in all of Us

Kendell, Luke, Pam, and John explore the Land of Skinny People, search for fossils while Pam finds the sun, and Kendell and Luke's rendition of Kobae, the not so skinny person.

The River

Carol, Mike, Ze, and Tom kayak the river from just outside of Moab to Base Camp.

Busy Day

Busy day at the "Ice Creme Parlor". Random pictures of the "extraction" and a not very happy Kobae.

Big Horn

Seven big horn hike the rocks above the lodge.

Jacobs Ladder

Heather and Ze summit Jacob's Ladder. Tiago and Thais play on the beach.

Saturday Extraction

Kobae climbed down in his burrow Tuesday afternoon and has not been seen since. Tom checks on him each afternoon and has put a heat lamp as far down as he can but he can't reach Kobae to touch his shell and see if he's cold. Shane squirms into the tunnel and says Kobae's shell is cold. Time to bring him out, something Kobae won't appreciate. After an hour of digging trying to get to him, Shane thinks he can climb in and put two fingers under his shell on each side, rope himself up, grabs Kobae, and Ze and Tom pull him out. Once Kobae it out of the tunnel, Heather drops two shovels to prevent him from going back in. Three years ago, this was a one man operation, two years ago a two man operation, and last year it took Tom and two disc golfers to get him out. This year, four people. Doesn't bode well for the future.

Evening Comes

I'm From the Government, and I'm Here to Help

The following takes place at 8am, Friday morning.

The Day

Porch work continues, the second hogan (Paul) nears completion, and night comes to the canyon lands. Somewhere, deep in his burrow, Kobae continues his adaptation to his new environment as he does every year. Tom hangs a heat lamp at the mouth of the tunnel though the earth does a pretty good job of maintaining a 66 degree temperature without any help. Last year, it was six days before Kobae came out. He has not been seen since Tuesday afternoon.

The Journey

Kobae spend his last day in San Diego.....eating, and his first day back in Moab......eating. Gifts Kobae left on the floor of the truck, a rest stop along the way, and seven, juvenile female big horn, remotely interested in the truck as it returns to Base Camp.

The Disappearing Clover

The Championship

San Diego Sockers win the PASL Pro league 9-8 over Guadalajara and the fans flood the field.

Kobster

Kobae roams the neighborhood still eating everything that is yellow and purple.

Not Good

The Pot Ash natural gas pipeline under the river is about done and they are hauling all the heavy equipment out. As Tom heads to San Diego to get Kobae one of the trucks is having issues on the Z turns on the way to town. There are no options. Tom will simply have to wait until the issues are solved.

Construction

Tom leaves Thursday to pick up the Kobster and return on Monday. Still a bit cold outside so probably spend a week or two inside the lodge until it's warm enough to move back outside. In the meantime, the construction crew came in today and said they'd be all finished by the time Tom returns next week.

In Search Of

Linny and Tom have seen tracks of otter and beaver but not yet seen them. Today they search the river bank for either. They find where beaver and otter slide in and out of the river and where beaver have chewed down smaller trees for their dam but Linny nor Tom have yet found the dam.

Today's Mission, Should You Accept, Ms Linny is....

All Together Now

They Grow Up So Quick

At four years old Linny had climbed Jacob's Ladder and Catacomb Rock that many adults were unable to scale. At five years old she had rafted a large chunk of the Colorado, and at 6 years old she's driving a full size ATV. Despite her spirit and huge heart and so far no sign of fear, Tom has decided it's time to slow things down a little. No dynamite until she's eight.
