Kobae hikes up to the local elementary school to visit Thais but when school lets out and all the kids come out he makes a run for it. Kobae heads over to the former Tortoise Rescue Center and for 30 minutes tries to understand where all the ones like him have gone. Looking across the street, there's a dog coming. Short time later the San Diego Police Department Courtesy Patrol pulls Kobae over. Figuring the dog ratted on him Kobae makes a run for it.
The day has grown weary and the shadows have consumed it. Even the wind is resting as darkness quickly closes. For this day it's time for Kobae to return home. There will be other days.
