That Cracking Sound

For the second time inside a year a piece of the Anti Cline surrenders to wind, erosion, and gravity.

American Discovery Trail

Nobody walks to Base Camp, unless, they are hiking the American Discovery Trail across the country or the Hayduke Trail around the Colorado Plateau. Last night, when Tom heard the footsteps coming up the driveway, one or the other. When Samuel came to the door, Tom said "Discovery or Hayduke?" Samuel said "Discovery." Tom said "Yes, you can get water and stay in the hogan."

At first light Samuel was on his was. To reach San Francisco by Aug 20th when he had an airplane ticket back to Switzerland, but first, he had to conquer Base Camp to Needles, 50 or so miles of hell over the next two days and there would be plenty of challenges later should he survive this one. Good luck Samuel. You'll need every bit of it.

Echo Wall

Linny and Tom had bounced a thousand echoes off the wall behind Chicken Corner, but today was the first day Tom had ventured over to the wall itself. It won't be the last time.

From Hurrah

Then Came the Rain

The first jeep got stuck in Kane Creek, the second went in to get him, that's when the first three foot high wall of water hit. The third jeep tried to help the other two. The second wall of water was six feet high. They heard the second wall coming and everybody got out in time. Pieces of the jeeps stick out of the mud after their two mile journey down Kane Creek.

Quiet Sunday Morning

It rained all night and the ground has turned more brown than red, a first in a very long time. Later today, the trees will bloom, flowers blossom, and cactus explode. Best hiking day possible.

Wake up Kobae.

Linny and Kobae

There's a little bit less sunlight brightening up Base Camp today as Linny had to return to Salt Lake for a few weeks to finish school before returning for a usually large part of the summer. Miss her already. Kobae on the other hand decided after 50 days back at the lodge that it was finally time to go hiking and hiking he and Tom did. Eerie second picture, is it just me or does the rock just under Kobae in the picture, look just like him?

Trouble on Cliff Hangar

Linny and Tom standby to see if vehicles coming up Cliff Hangar need their help.

Tangri La Characters

Linny, not comfortable with the Tangri La Characters.

More Tangri La

Road closed 5 feet? An old bus used for storage and a baseball Linny doesn't quite understand. She's not alone.

Horseshoes, Cannons, and Artillery Shells

Tangri La Observation Deck

Tangri La Main House

Up the stairs from the garage into the Main House, also blasted into the side of the rock.

Tangri La One

Bill, Linny, and Tom kayak across the river to visit Tangri La. First a walk through the garage area where everything possible is stored, in multiples.

Tuesday

Linny and Tom, planning to kayak to Base Camp from close to town, scout out launching points and Linny finds a bear in the desert. Bill remodels Kobae's house and it's so nice and large, Yeti decides she can fit in there too. A brief reminder from Mother Nature who the star of the canyon lands show is.
