Mud Monster

On the return hike to the lodge two days after the rains there are still huge mud puddles in the trail and Kobae visits every single one. Down our new driveway which looked substantially different just that very morning and home just before dark.

Did you mention he tells time?

The way I do it is it doesn't matter what time it is, only how much time I have left before it gets dark because Kobae won't hike in the dark. Sometimes I can put a headlamp in front of him and get him to go a little further but not much. So, extend your arm and have the palm of your hand facing you while pointing it at the bottom of the sun. Then do the same with your other arm and hand and each hand from the bottom of the sun to the ground is one hour. Rule of thumb is each finger to the ground from the bottom of the sun is 15 minutes of day light left. Doesn't work if you're next to a cliff but in general it works great because the size of your hand is proportionate to the length of your arm. My rule of thumb is Kobae hikes about a mile an hour so depending on how far we are from the lodge I try to turn him around usually two to three hours before it gets dark and he's been amazingly cooperative this year.
